Youth With Resemblance Of Assaulter Caught From Gopalnagar

Ranaghat, March 16: Acting on a tip off provided by an ‘unidenfifed’ caller, the CID last night detained a youth from Ambikanagar area under Gopalnagar police station in North 24- Parganas in connection with the Ranaghat convent rape and dacoity. CID sources said that that detained youth has resemblance with one of the four assaulters seen in the CCTV footage at the Ranaghat school on March 14.

A police officer said the whereabouts of the youth, who is in his mid- twenties, was found from a person in Nadia, who refused to identify himself.

" We got the information late last night and rushed to in Ambikanagar area of Mahmudpur in Gopalnagar. We had the address with us and asked the youth's parents about their son. The youth was at home but tried to resist when asked him to accompany us. However, we managed bring him with us. Now he is under detention and kept at Ranaghat police station for interrogation”.

The officer added: " The youth desperately tried to avoid us and refused even to come with us and we had to use force. We tied his hands and legs before putting him in our vehicle."

So far the CID has detained nine persons, including last night's youth, in connection with the Ranaghat incident.

CID sources said the youth earlier worked in a hotel in kerala and presently attached with a non- banking financial company in Habra.

Nadia district superintendent of police Arnab Ghosh said: " One of those detained resembles an accused in the CCTV footage. However, we are yet to say conclusively that he is the man in the footage. We are checking his antecedents as well as his whereabouts at the time of the crime."
