Mohonpur (Nadia), Nov. 22: A factional feud of Trinamul Congress today led to a complete shut down of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswabidyalay as a joint forum of a section of non teaching staff, students and teachers of the agricultural university led by a section of the party today staged a picketing at its main campus in Nadia’s Mohonpur and two other places leading to suspension of classes, examinations, research works and regular administration jobs demanding removal of the university’s interim registrar, who they alleged was appointed illegally.

Significantly enough, the bone of contention, interim registrar professor Subhendu Bikash Goswami, whose removal has been demanded by the Trinamul led “Joutha Mancha”, is the secretary of BCKV unit of Trinamul affiliated WestBengal College and University Professors' Association (WBCUPA). On the other hand, the “Joutha Mancha”, is led by BCKV’s non teaching staff Maran Kumar De, who is chairman of Trinamul ruled Gayeshpur Municipality and Rajib Dalal, a contractual worker of the varsity and chairman of Haringhata Municipality.

The picketing by the Trinamul led forum - ‘Joutha Mancha”, that in real term imposed a cease work on the teachers, staff and students eventually led to a complete shut down at university’s three campuses – Mohonpur, Bankura and Burdwan as well as 16 agricultural farms and 5 research centres.

The situation took such a passé that an angry vice chancellor professor Dharani Dhar Patra today categorically termed today’s development as “obvious internal bickering”.

“The professor who has been appointed registrar belongs to Trinamul Congress. He is secretary of university’s unit of WBCUPA. Those who are protesting his appointment and demanding that someone from them be appointed as registrar are also belong to Trinamul. I have appraised agriculture minister and special agricultural advisor to chief minister Professor Pradip Majumder about the situation in the campus today and sought heir intervention”, VC said.

Insiders at the university, however, claimed that Joutha Mancha’s agitation is actually aimed to retain a post for one of its prominent leaders.

“During the tenure of interim vice chancellor Asit Kumar Chakraborty, a post in the extension education department was created, which has non existent in the university stature. A Joutha Mancha leader was appointed to the post. The state government later suspended providing fund for salary for this unapproved post. Professor Subhendu Bikash Goswami was very vocal against creation of this post. The Joutha Mancha wants to retain the post for its leader and at the same time wants removal of Goswami, who is now become interim registrar”, an insider said.

Fresh Trouble began during September after the VC appointed Subhendu Bikash Goswami as the interim registrar removing Partha S Chatterjee. As per University stature, VC can appoint a senior professor or an officer equivalent to the status of professor as interim registrar for a period of six months.

“The appointment of the interim registrar was done strictly following the university’s act and stature. There was nothing illegal in the matter. I don’t know how they termed it illegal. I have told them that process of appointment regular registrar would begin soon and the present appointment is just a temporary arrangement, but they were not convinced.”, added vice chancellor.

Joutha Mancha’s leader Maran De said: “The appointment was illegal as there was no approval of the EC. Moreover, the man who was appointed has a corrupt past”

Professor Biswanath Bandopadhaya, president of WBCUPA’s BCKV unit and state committee’s assistant secretary, who is also former vice chancellor of Uttarbanga Viswabidyalay said: “As per the university’s stature the appointment of interim registrar is a sole discretion of the VC. Approval of the EC is not mandatory requirement for such appointment”.

“Some teachers and employees are damaging the atmosphere in the campus exploiting their political clout for personal interest. They are misusing Trinamul’s name, whereas the party and the leadership do not at all indulge such activities”, professor Bandopadhaya said.
