Traders Robbed Of Rupees 27 Lakhs In Santipur

Santipur, Dec. 22: A gang of around ten armed miscreants robbed four businessmen at gun point blocking their way on NH-34 by two vehicles and decamped with Rupees Twenty-seven lakhs late on Sunday night.

The incident occurred at Natunbazar area, located at the outskirt of Santipur town, when a group of 4 rice-stockiest from the town was returning in a Maruti Eeco from Berhampur with cash which they received as payment for the rice they sold there.

The four businessmen have lodged a complaint at the Santipur police station late in the night. However, till Monday afternoon police could arrest none in connection with the alleged robbery.

According to police, Basudev Paul, Mana Halder, Biswanath Mandal and Puchon Biswas, who are all rice stockiest had started for Santipur from Berhampur in the evening. At around 8 PM, a little before they were to enter the Santipur town, their Maruti Eeco car was stopped by a Tata sumo.

Basudeb Pal said: “When we reached Natunpara market after Govidapur bypass crossing, five youths on a Sumo blocked our way. Before we could understand what happened, they disembarked from their vehicle and blocked our way brandishing revolver. Soon a mini truck blocked our vehicle from the opposite direction. We were caged immediately. Around five more youths joined them from truck, who at gun point asked us to handover the cash we were carrying. They beaten up our driver Tarak Biswas and also hit us with revolver. Finding no way we handed over our cash, a kitty of Rupees twenty seven lakhs, our mobile phones. Within ten minutes the operation was over and the miscreants fled the spot”.

“Before leaving the miscreants had threatened us to kill if we raise any alarm”, added Mana Mandal another victimized businessman.

A police officer of Santipur police station said, “Investigation has already started into the case. We have also got some important clues about the incident and expect to nab the gang very soon”.
