Ranaghat, June 18: The CID would soon appeal before court seeking permission to obtain DNA samples of all the six Bangladeshis arrested in connection with Ranaghat rape and robber case to match their DNA with sample of semen found at the bed of the elderly nun who was raped on March 14 night during a robbery at the Ranaghat convent.

The CID would try to get the DNA matching done at the earliest as it has been contemplating to submit the charge sheet in the case by the end of this month, even though at least four more suspected Bangladeshi nationals are still at large.

The need of matching the DNA sample comes up strong following the arrest of Nazrul Sheikh, alias Nozu, by the CID on Wednesday night from Sealdah station, a CID officer said.

The CID suspects that Nazrul had raped the elderly nun during the dacoity at the Jesus and Mary high school in Ranaghat on March 14 night

A CID officer said: “Even though it is yet to be conclusively established, the five other gang members who were arrested earlier have told us during interrogation that it was Nazrul who had raped the nun. At least two of the accused persons have also said that they tried to prevent Nazrul raping the nun, but he was desperate”.

“So a DNA matching can only confirm who actually raped the nun”, said the officer.

The CID, however, meanwhile desperately trying to arrest four other suspected Bangladeshi Nationals – Habib, Fakir, Manik and Tuhin, who are most probably hiding in Bangladesh now.

The CID would most likely submit the charge sheet in this case by the end of this month. “Our aim is to nab all the suspects and to get the DNA matching done before we submit the charge-sheet in the court”, a CID officer said.

Meanwhile, on Thursday Nazrul (30) alias Nose was produced before the court of additional chief judicial magistrate Papiya Das in Ranaghat, who ordered 14 day’s CID custody for him.

Nazrul, a resident of Jessore in Bangladesh, one of the brains behind the attack, was caught a little after he disembarked from a local train from Bangaon.

With the arrest of Nazrul, the CID so far arrested six persons in all in connection with the case, which sent shockwaves across the country and was highlighted by the opposition as an example of the failure of law and order in the state.

CID officers claimed that Nazrul is a close aide of Milan Sarkar, the mastermind of the attack and played a crucial role in the gang. “Nazrul along with Milan and Gopal Sarkar conducted a survey at the convent two days earlier of the attack".

Assistant public prosecutor Pradip Pramanik said: “Accused Nazrul Islam was charged under Sections 376 (rape), 395 (dacoity) and 397 (robbery with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of the IPC. To explore the conspiracy behind the heinous crime that was committed by the gang of which the accused was a member, the CID needed to take him into their custody for a longer period. The court has granted custody of 14 days, the maximum eligible time”.

The APP, however, could not immediately confirm if the face of Nazrul has matched with image of any of the miscreants which captured by the CCTVs in the school on the fateful night.

“This aspect has to be examined and will be appraised later,” the APP said.

According to the CID sources, the arrest of Nazrul was made possible with the help of Bangladeshi sources and tracking his calls from Bangladesh.

A CID officer said: “On Tuesday we were alerted that Nazorr would try to cross border. We were constantly monitoring his calls to one of his close aides in North 24 Parganas. Yesterday, we got a tip-off that Nazrul has crossed border and boarded a train to Sealdah in a bid to sneak into Calcutta through Sealdah station. We were waiting at the station and nabbed him as soon as he got down from the train.”
