Santipur, May 22: Armed miscreants apparently hired by the Baliadanga Sharif B Ed college authority in Nadia’s Santipur on Friday locked in students inside the campus and later beaten up the students brutally when they tried to make a forced exit to take one of their classmates to a hospital, who fell ill due to scorching heat inside a classroom.

The miscreants allegedly beaten up the students with bamboo, sticks, until neighboring villagers rushed in to rescue them. Three students were injured in the attack, who were later admitted to Saktinagar district hospital in Krishnanagar.

Hospital sources said, students identified as Rabisankar Dey, Prasun Niyogi and Biswanath Ghosh apparently hit by dumb objects and suffered multiple injuries on their legs, hands, chest, back and on heads.

Two media persons (include The Telegraph’s photo contributor Abhi Ghosh) were also beaten up by the miscreants and admitted to Santipur state general hospital with similar injuries.

A large police team later rushed to the spot, however, could arrest none.

Police has started a case into the matter.

On the other hand aggrieved students, later met additional district magistrate (general) Utpal Bhadra who assured security to the students and asked police to conduct a probe in the matter.

“I have received a complaint from the students. I have sent the complaint to Krishnanagar police officer in charge and asked him to conduct the probe and to arrange security for the students”,  the ADM added.

In last week, 30 students of the college lodged FIR against its owner Sharif Mandal for charging money under different heads in excess of course fee and also threatening the students of dire consequence unless they pay the amount.

Fresh trouble broke out since Monday when the college authority in a bid to keep the students engaged in college activities issued notice asking to attend the collage at 10.30 am and not to leave before 4 Pm.

“We were served notice to attend the college mandatorily and to be present during 10.30 am to 4 Pm. To keep the students inside the college, the college authority locked the entry-exit gate and deployed some local goons with bamboo polices in their hand, so that the student do not dare to go out of the campus”, a student said.

“However, the scorching heat made things difficult for us. During the last few days classes were completed by 1 Pm, nevertheless, we were not allowed to go outside. There was no water inside the college, fans are also often kept off. Despite that we were forced to sweat in heat. But on Friday a student Rangalal Kisku fell unconscious apparently due to heat. Some of our classmates tried to take him out for medical treatment. But, the miscreants refused to allow them to go outside. This angered the students, who broke open the gate to come out. After this Kutub Mandal, brother of owner Sharif Mandal led the miscreants to attack the students”, said a student.

“Men covering their head with gamcha attacked us and threatened to kill if we dare to go outside. We pleaded them to arrange for water and for some medicine, but they refused and started beating us”, the students said.

College owner Sharif Mandal refused the allegation. “The students created the chaos and blaming us to malign the image of the college”, he said.
