Krishnanagar, June 28: In a tragic incident six members of a family died in a road accident during heavy rain that caused poor visibility during the wee hours of Sunday morning while they were returning home after performing the last rights of their paternal uncle.

The bizarre incident occurred when the driver of the mini track in which the seven cousins were returning to their home in Hogolberia, had lost control of the vehicle amidst heavy shower and rammed on to a road side tree in high speed at Arong Sarisha village of Chapra located on the Krishnanagar-Karimpur state highway.

All the six of the seven cousins died on the spot, while the remaining one and the driver of the vehicle were critically injured and admitted to Saktinagar district hospital in Krishnanagar.

According to police the incident occurred at about 3.30 am.

The locals informed the police, which recovered the body and admitted Kartick Biswas and driver Manab Mandal to the hospital.

The victims were identified as Panchanan Biswas (45), Biswanath Biswas (36), Prakash Biswas (41), Rathin Biswas (43), Susanta Biswas (48) and Prasanta Biswas (38).

The victims, all farmers by profession were residents of Dewanpara village under Hogolberia police station in Nadia.

Nadia police superintendant Bharatlal Meena said: “The exact reason behind the accident could not affirm, but it is clear that the driver lost control of the vehicle and eventually hit the tree”.

Police said, the seven brothers on Saturday evening came to Radhanagar area in Krishnanagar after hearing news of demise of their paternal uncle Hirendra Nath Biswas who died due to old age ailments.

From Radhanagar they went to Nabadweep funeral ghat to perform the last rights along with other relatives who went in a separate vehicle, police added.

Souren Biswas, son of one of the demised Susanta Biswas said: “I called my father at around 2 Am, when he said that they were on the way from Nabadweep after the last rites. He said that they had started after taking food from a road side eatery in Krishanangar and coming slowly due to rain. After around two hours the police called us to convey the news of accident to me”.

“We later rushed to Chapra police station where I identified the bodies and later went to Saktinagar hospital to see my injured uncle”, he added.

According to locals, who along with police first rescued the injured persons claimed that heavy rain that had probably caused the visibility led the accident.

“It was raining heavily throughout the Saturday. The downpour even continued over the night which also created pot holes on the road. We talked to the driver, who said that he could not see the road while trying to avoid a pothole due to heavy rain”, a local said in Chapra.

Souren Biswas, a relative of the victims, also echoed the same.

Meanwhile, autopsy of the six brothers were done at Saktinagar hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Hospital sources said, “All the victims had suffered fatal injuries. It appeared that they fell from the vehicle in high speed while they were sleeping”.
