Krishnanagar, Dec. 17: Police had to take the resort of lathi charge to control hundreds of BJP supporters who turned violent and attacked police during a law violation programme in Krishnanagar organized against the alleged reign of terror perpetrated by the ruling Trinamul Congress in the state.

The state BJP leadership has alleged that a large number of civic police joined the men in uniform to unleash a terror and brutally beaten up the top BJP leaders, workers including women in Krishnanagar from both end of the rally.

Around 50 BJP supporters including party’s National secretary Suresh Pujari were injured in the lathi charge while around 11 policemen were injured as they were hit by stones allegedly hurled by the violent BJP supporters.

Additional SP Ajay Prasad said: “. The situation compelled us to lathi charge in self defence to bring the violent BJP supporters under control”

4 BJP supporters were admitted to hospital in Krishnanagar. Police detained state president Dilip Ghosh, state party minder Kailash Vijayvargiya, National secretary Suresh Pujar and state leader Amal Ghosh along with five other part workers for alleged violation of law and for attack on police.

The police later released the top leaders, except the five activists which triggered a fresh agitation late in the night. The state president Dilip Ghosh and others refused to leave the police station and sat on an indefinite hunger strike demanding release of the five activists.

Police sources said, the five activists would be produced before a court in Krishnanagar on Friday.

The BJP leadership has decided to continue the sit in demonstration with hunger strike until the five workers are released. State leader and prominent actor Rupa Ganguly would join the fresh agitation in Krishnanagar on Friday.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said: “The police and the civic volunteers attacked from both end and trapped the supporters and leadership making a trap. It is a preplanned attack and we have never seen the civic volunteers taking such a brutal role as they appeared working as cadre of the ruling parties”.

The police started lathi charge at about 4 pm after the unruly BJP supporters broken the first barricade on the MM Ghosh street and started pelting stones targeting the policemen behind the second barricade while proceeding towards the office of the district magistrate.

Around ten thousand BJP supporters were gathered from across the state on the MM Ghosh Street approaching the DM office to attend the law violation programme. The police failed to resist the slogan shouting supporters who broke at least two barricades in violent manner.

The situation turned hostile when the BJP workers started pelting stone being prevented by the police near Rabindra Bhawan.

State president Dilip Ghosh and Kailash Vijayvargiya sat on demonstration in front of the DM office campus in protest against the lathi charge accusing the police of “unleashing terror being afraid of the BJP show of support”.

Police, however, later arrested the two leaders from the spot.

Dilip Ghosh said: “Police acted brutally from political vendetta to appease its political bosses. They did not even spare the women. At least two women were seriously injured in the lathi charge”.
Earlier speaking at the program Kailash Vijayvargiya said: "the Bengal has become the land of the rapists. The women have no security and dignity in this state. Everyday women are raped here, but the chief minister has only become concerned to protect her skin from Sardha scam"...
