Krishnanagar, Oct. 17: A 16 year old inmate of a Government run home for destitute and under trial women in Krishnanagar has alleged that she was raped several times by a middle aged night guard during the past two months. At least three other girls staying at the home located in Nagendranagar area of the town have also alleged that they were molested by the same night guard.

The shocking fact came to light on Friday evening during an inspection by chief judicial magistrate of Nadia Ashimananda Mandal to the home named as ‘District shelter home’ which is run by the Directorate of social welfare since 1992.

Sources at the home said that the girls in last week appraised the district child protection officer Anindya Das about the alleged sexual torture being committed by the night guard. However, Das allegedly ignored the matter apparently.

The incident revived the memory of a private home in Hooghly’s Gurap where women inmates were raped and buried after murder during July 2012.

According to source, the victim girl broke down in tears and revealed before the CJM that she was raped repeatedly by 49 year old night guard Ranjan Modak at the store room of the Home’s kitchen. Ironically Modak’s 20 year old daughter works as a contractual computer operator at the home. Modak is a residence of Ghurni area of Krishnanagar.

Two other minor girls came in support to her while at least three other girls told the CJM that Modak had molested them several times during his duty hours in night, sources claimed.

A shocked CJM directed the accompanying police officers to take complaint from the girl and initiate investigation

Superintendant of police, Nadia Bharat Lal Meena said: “We have received the complaint and started investigation. The accused person, however, went absconding. As the victim girl was staying at the home as per court order, we have sought permission for her medical examination and to record her statement”.

Sources at Nadia district child protection office claimed that the victim girl is an orphan staying at different homes for the last three years. She fled from a home in Malda July this year and later caught by GRP in Krishnanagar platform in July. She was handed over to Life Line, an NGO working for destitute children. The court later sent her to the Krishnanagar based home.

Police sources said that during preliminary investigation the girls said that Modak was abusive since long. However, the home authority never given any heed to their complaints.

One of the victim girls told police that they first informed the DCPO and later the Lady superintendant of the home, but none took any action.

An investigating officer said: “We will interrogate more girls at the home to find out the actual situation inside the home”.

Superintendant of the home Rina Dhara, however, refused to talk on the allegation. DCPO Anindya Das did not take calls.

The home was set up during 1992 for the destitute women and under trail and can accommodate 55 inmates. However, at present 35 women have been staying at the home.

The incident has meanwhile embarrassed the district administration as it raised the issue of security of the women at the government run home.

Sub divisional officer (Krishnanagar Sadar) visited the home on Saturday morning and talked to the victim girl. “A probe has been ordered. We are examining all aspects including issue of security at the home”, she precisely said.

Chairperson of Nadia district child welfare committee Rina Mukherjee said: “I am very shocked about the incident. An investigation has been started. Law would take its course and I am hopeful that the culprit will be punished”. f
