Chapra, August 15: Police today exhumed the body of a second year BA student in Nadia’s Chapra nine days after he was murdered and buried allegedly by a man for having an illicit affair with his wife.

Body of Bakher Ali Mistry, 21, a student of Chapra Banglajhee college, was dug out from under a stack of jute-sticks at the house of the prime accused Paltu Sheikh in Pukhuria village, around 30-km from Krishnanagar town.

Police suspect, Paltu, a mason by profession had conspired to kill Bakher as he knew about the illicit affair with his wife. Local sources said, Paltu mostly stays in Maharashtra for professional reason. During his absence his wife Afroza developed an affair with Bakher.

Bakher went missing on the night August 6 a little after he returned home playing carom with friends. His mother Halema Biwi, a widow, lodged a complaint next day at Chapra police station accusing Paltu of abducting her son.

Police have today arrested two persons – Suman Bulbul Sheik (23) and Sahajan Sheikh (37) who were allegedly paid by Paltu to kill Bakher. the duo was produced before an additional district session judges' court in Krishnanagar and taken to police custody for five days.

With the two fresh arrest police so far arrested five persons including Paltu and his wife Afroza, who were arrested in last week.

The breakthrough came on last night when during an interrogation one of the three accused persons confessed that Bakher was killed and buried under the stack of the jute sticks.

“An accused confessed that Bakher was killed on the night he was abducted. He was later buried under the jute stack at Paltu’s home so that none could suspect”, an investigating officer said.

Police on Saturday morning identified the spot at Paltu’s residence and exhumed heavily decomposed body. It was later sent for autopsy to Krishnanagar.

Additional SP (rural) Tanmay Sarkar said: “Today we have exhumed the body in presence of a magistrate and sent for post mortem. The body was highly decomposed so it could not be immediately ascertained how the victim was killed. We are waiting for the autopsy report. We have arrested the two persons who executed the murder apparently on the instruction of the prime accused. The motive behind the murder, however, is still not clear enough. We are exploring all possible aspect, including the illicit affair between the victim and wife of the prime accused”.

The incident triggered tension in the area as the angry villagers ransacked the houses of the accused persons. A large police team later rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

On August 7, Bakher's mother Halema Bewa, lodged a complaint against Paltu and two others. On the basis of the complaint police arrested three persons on August 9.

On August 10 morning, villagers gathered at the Chapra police station accusing police of inaction and also demanded that the arrested persons be handed over to them. This followed an altercation when police lathi charged to disperse the angry villagers. Police also arrested 34 villagers who mostly include students and women allegedly for attacking “police station”.
