Thanarpara (Nadia), April 16: A large section of local residents of different areas of Karimpur-II block, gheraoed superintendent of Natidanga block hospital keeping him locked inside his chamber along with an assistant CMOH for about three hours, demanding that the transfer orders of two doctors serving at the hospital be cancelled immediately to ensure proper service to the patients.

The angered locals said, transfer order would leave the hospital with only with three doctors, for which service to the patients have seriously hampered.

Demanding the withdrawal of the transfer orders of the two doctors Subhendu Biswas and Subrata Saha, the protestors, who were joined by local Trinamul supporters, locked Superintendent Pranab Mullick, who is also the BMOH, along with ACMOH Sachin Sarkar, who came to attend a ligation camp.

The gherao that began at 10.30 am was withdrawn at 1.30 Pm after CMOH Nadia Tapas Kumar Roy assured to withheld transfer of one doctor until a suitable solution could be arranged.

The 30-bedded Natidanaga block hospital under Karimpur-II is located 85 km away from Krishnanagar. Around two lakhs people of five gram panchayat and a large section of people from Dombkol block depend on it.

The trouble began in last month when doctor Subhendu Biswas was transferred to take charge of newly opened ‘high dependency unit’ Tehatta sub divisional hospital. Problem developed further in last week, when doctor Subrata Saha who joined early this month, was transferred to Saktinagar district hospital in Krishnanagar.

“There is huge pressure of patients at the hospital. But, the hospital never was equipped with adequate number of doctors. Two new doctors posted were transferred soon. This hampered the service seriously. We appealed the authorities it done nothing. So we gheraoed the Super today in protest against the transfer,” said Anisur Reheman Mandal, a local resident.

“We had no option other than this. We had gheraoed the superintendent today to press for the cancellation of the transfer orders. Local people including the families of patients who either admitted or came to outdoor for treatment participated in the agitation”, said Sabdar Halsana, president of Natidanga Trinamul Congress.

Superintendent Pranab Mullick said: “The grievance of the locals is genuine. We need full strength of six doctors to provide proper service to the patients. But one post is already converted to Karimpur hospital. The hospital has since been running with just three doctors. Very recently two doctors were posted. But, they were transferred too soon. Hospital has at present has around 80 patients admitted against capacity of 30 bed and around 900 patients visit the outdoor department daily. Even patients from Jitpur, Garibpur, Kusberia, Patbihar of Murshidabad’s Domkol block visit the hospital. So transfer of the doctors created serious problem, but I am helpless. The locals locked me today and gheraoed for about three hours. I have told them that I have no authority to bring them back. I apprised the CMOH who have assured to withhold transfer of one doctor temporarily”.

CMOH Tapas Kumar Roy said: “I am on leave now. I have withheld transfer of one doctor. I will try to solve the problem once I return”.

The locals have, however, threatened to launch a movement, if the transfer orders were not dumped.
