Kalyani, July 6: A CID team probing the alleged leak of Industrial Training Institute (ITI) entrance examination question paper has arrested a BA second year student from a hide out in Kalyani during the early hours of Monday morning.

The arrested youth identified as Arojit Das (20) is a student of KalyaniCollege and a Trinamul Congress Chatra Parishad activist. He has also been simultaneously undergoing An industrial entrepreneurship training of ‘motor mechanic’ at ITI-Kalyani.

A resident of Kalyani Majherchar area Arojit was picked up by the CID team from a hide out in B block of Kalyani town at about 4.30 Am on Monday. He was later produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Barasat in North 24 pargana district.

The court ordered CID custody for Arojit for eight days.

State technical education minister Ujjwal Biswas: “I hope that the CID would soon able to bust the entire racket and ensure strongest punishment for the persons who played with the career of lakhs of students”.

After the arrest Arojit was taken to Bhawani Bhawan, where he was interrogated by senior CID officers for long hours before producing before the Barasat court in the afternoon.

The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by the state technical education department following the ITI entrance examination question leaked allegedly at least two days before the examination scheduled for June 28 for which 1.33 lakh candidates were applied.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee ordered a CID probe on the same day into the alleged leak of the question paper after it was cancelled and rescheduled for July 5.

Speaking about the arrest of the student, a CID officer said: “We have got specific evidences against Arojit that confirms his involvement into the question leak racket. We have already interrogated him and got some crucial links that would help us to bust the racket soon”.

Sources said, the sleuths have recovered some recorded conversation of cell phones in which the accused student purportedly asking some unidentified persons to pay money for the ITI entrance exam question papers.

“Even though we are yet to conclusively sure that the voice was of Arojit, but there is a strong similarity. We are examining the recorded audio tapes and interrogating him about his knowledge about the leak of question papers”, the CID officer said.

According to police, Arojit’s name surfaced up as one of the prime suspect behind leak of question since June 28 – the initial day of the examination.

“We got tip off that in Kalyani Arojit has been working as the main agent of the gang. So after the examination was cancelled, we detained him and his brother Surojit for interrogation. But, released them later”, a police officer of Kalyani police said.

Sources claimed that two prominent Trinamul Congress leaders literally forced the police to release the two brothers.

Meanwhile, claiming ‘innocence’ about him, Arojit’s mother Manju, a hawker who sells roasted corn, told that her son has been hiding for past few days following the instruction of Nadia Trinamul Congress Chatra Parishad's  working President Sourik Mukhjerjee alias Babai.

This has raised a suspicion about involvement of a section of Trinamul Chatra Parishad activist into the alleged question leak.

Manju said: “In last week Babai (Sourik) came to my shop and advised my son, who was also present there, to go under cover for few days. We know Babai very well for long time. He also often comes to my shop and purchases roasted corn. Nevertheless, I got no idea why he advised my son to go on hiding. My son, however, followed his instruction and was hiding for past few days”.

Sourik Mukherjee is by profession is a lawyer at Kalyani ACJM court and cousin brother of Kalyani town Trinamul congress president Arup Mukherjee.

Being asked about Arojit’s mother’s claim, Sourik said: “I never advised Arojit to go under cover. Why should I advise him so? I knew him well, but advising such a non sense thing does not arise at all when I personally alerted the police about his suspected involvement behind the alleged question leak. How can I advise a person to go under cover while I am alerting the police about his suspected involvement. Claim of Arojit's mother is almost rubbish and I will take legal action against her in consultation with party leadership”.

Sourik also ruled out that accused youth is a Trinamul Chatra Parishad activist. “He or his mother may claim so, but he was never involved to our organization.”
