18 Trinamul Supporters Get Life Imprisonment For Killing CPI (M) Leader

Krishnanagar, June 17: 18 Trinamul activists were sentenced to life imprisonment for by a fast track court in Krishnanagar on Wednesday for killing a CPI (M) leader in 2004. The victim Ahachand Shah, who was also deputy chief of Dhoradaha-II panchayat under Karimpur-II block and CPI (M)’s Dhoradaha local committee members, was brutally killed by a gang of 18 miscreants led by one Mortuza Shekih over a land dispute on early hours of November 9 morning of 2004.

Miscreants attacked Ahachand at his home 3.30 am on the day while he was preparing for Roja at the dawn. He was hacked and later shot at from close range. Police started a case and arrested 18 persons. 17 persons later granted bail.

All the miscreants were Congress activists. However, after getting the bail, they joined Trinamul Congress in 2014.

Assistant PP Mangalmoy Mukherjee said: “On Tuesday, additional session judge Pijush Kanti Roy of 4th fast track court in Krishnanagar found all the 18 guilty under section 302 (murder) and 449/34(house trespass with motive for offence) of the IPC. On Wednesday, the court sent them for life imprisonment”.

All the guilt were taken to custody on Tuesday after the court found them guilty.

Victim’s son Subin Sha (25), said: “We are happy that justice has been done. If the killers of my father challenge the verdict at a higher court, I will fight further to ensure that they are punished”.

Karimpur-II Trinamul block president Arzel Haq Mandal said: “We will try to provide support to the 18 so that they could challenge the verdict”.
