122Km Human Chain In Nadia Against Open Defecation

In an endeavor to make people aware against ‘open defecation’ and to make the district free from this bad habit, the Nadia district administration on Saturday formed a 122-km long human chain along the National highway – 34 from Jagulia to Plassey. Around ten thousand students, elected representatives of assembly, parliament, municipalities, panchayats, zilla parishad, government officials, social workers and other individuals from different walks of life joined hand in this human chain, that was titled as ‘Nirmal Manab Bandhan’ as a part under the district administration’s ambitious programme ‘Sabar Souchagar’. The human chain was on the road for one hour – from 10.30 to 11.30 AM, when all the participants had also took a pledge against the ‘open defecation’ that broadcasted through the All India Radio (AIR). Brain behind the initiative, Dr. P.B.Salim, Nadia District Magistrate said: “The programme is aimed to bring a behavioral change and social awareness among common people so that the district could be declared free from open defecation. With this aim, we have a target to construct 3.39 lakh toilets by March this year, of which already 2.89 lakh toilets have been constructed”. The UNICEF,
