Kalyani, Aug. 22: A huge cache of arms and bombs were recovered by a CID team during an early morning raid on Saturday in Soguna-Lichutala area of Kalyani. Eight persons including a prominent Trinamul activist Prasanta Biswas and one of his brothers were arrested in this connection. The accused persons were taken to CID’s state head quarter in Bhawani Bhawan in Calcutta for interrogation.

According to CID, sources around 100 country made bombs, 25 firearms with life ammunitions, a rifle were recovered during the raid from at least two houses.

A CID officer said: “The raid was conducted as we came to know that Prasanta and his gang members have accrued huge bombs and ammunitions. We also came to know that they were arranged materials for making bombs too”.

CID sources in Calcutta said that acting on a tip off the raid was conducted jointly with a team of Kalyani police and CID officers from Calcutta, Krishnanagar and Barrackpur.

The three hours raid began at around 3 am on Saturday, has, however, raised several allegations of atrocities on local innocent villagers and women members of the family of the accused.

Prasanta’s wife Papiya has alleged that the CID officers beaten up her when she protested against ransacking her home. She also alleged that the cops did not even spare her 9 months old child and a pet dog whose leg was broken.

“The officers were hurling abusive languages to us. They picked up my husband and beaten up her brutally and started ransacking my room. My two children were asleep them. They fell on ground as the cops pulled down the bed cover. When I tried to resist, they beaten up brutally injuring my hand”, she said.

Papiya alleged that her husband Prasanta is an active Trinamul worker, but arrested due to instigation by another section of the party leaders.

“The Trinamul used my husband, but it ultimately betrayed him. I am shocked about his arrest as there was no pending complaint against him except the murder charge for which he is on bail by Calcutta High court. Today I went to local Trinamul leaders for help, who however, apparently avoided me”.

Purnima Biswas, her sister in law also alleged same. Purnima’s husband Susanta, who is elder brother of Prasanta also arrested by CID.

Once a known CPI (M) muscleman, Prasanta’s rise was strongly noticed before the last Loke Sabha election, when he was used by the Trinamul Congress.

Locals alleged that Prasanta unleashed a reign of terror in the area, particularly to the industrial entrepreneurs, small businessmen and political opponents of Trinamul Congress which used it largely. From operating construction syndicate, land sell racket, lorry hijacking, Prasanta was controlling the Soguna belt

Earlier Sentenced to life for being convicted in murder Govinda Mandal, a Trinamul activist and a gang leader in Soguna, by a lower court, Prasanta was granted released on bail during 2012.

Later in the year Prasanta, Prasanta was handpicked by close aides of Mukul Roy to intimidate political opponents in Kalyani, Soguna, Gayeahpur and adjacent areas.

A section of Trinamul leadership thinks that this brought trouble for Prasanta as he remained loyal to Mukul Roy and his son Subhranshu.

In the recently held Municipal election in Kalyani and Gayeshpur, it was Prasanta and his gang ensured that the voters of opposition parties do not reach the polling booths.

Prasanta recently earned the wrath of gang member Ajit Sarkar as he protested his illicit affair with a number of women. In last week, there was conflict between the two when Ajit had threatened Prasanta, who is more loyal to Sankar Barui, a murder accused and another gang leader of Soguna who is absconding. Sankar has enmity with Prasanta as became the sole gang operator in Soguna.
