Homemaker Found Dead, Mob Set Ablaze Businesman's House

Nabadweep, June 25: Violent mob set ablaze house of a cooking utensil shop owner Malanchapara area of Nabadweep town late on Wednesday night accusing him killing his wife. The locals went on rampage and set the house of Sitanshu Debnath on fire after finding that his wife Poonam (25) was hanging from the ceiling fan. Sitanshu tried to convince the locals that his wife had committed suicide, but the mob ransacked his house and set it on fire.

Police rushed in to recover body and also called the fire brigade. Two fire tenders doused the fire little past midnight.

After preliminary investigation police said that there were marks of strangulation around the neck of the deceased woman. “We have sent the body for post mortem to ascertain the reason behind death”, a police officer said.

A neighbor said: “The woman was regularly tortured by the in-laws’ and they killed her by strangulation and tried to prove it as suicide”.

Police later arrested five of the in-laws’ on the basis of a complaint lodged by Sadhan Mandal, father of the deceased homemaker. However, Sitanshu, husband of the woman and two other managed to flee.

He said: “Since the marriage occurred two years ago, my son in law and other members of the family unleashed torture on my daughter demanding money. I tried my best to satisfy them. But their demand went increasing and eventually they killed her today”.
