Four Persons Arrested For Kalyani University Rampage

Kalyani, Feb. 19: Police on Thursday have arrested the woman who was seen in television footage beating up the Kalyani university estate officer and heckling a lady professor during an agitation by the Trinamul backed non teaching employees and outsiders at Kalayni University’s administrative building on Tuesday.

The woman identified as Jamuna Dinda (53) claimed to be a Trinamul worker while being taken into a police van rubbishing the education minister Partha Chatterjee’s claim of ‘outsider’.

Meanwhile, a large police force has been deployed to maintain ‘peace and order’ inside the University campus on Thursday.

Vice chancellor Professor Hangloo submitted a report on Thursday to the Governor on Tuesday’s incident and subsequent development.

Accused Jamuna is wife of a retired employee of the varsity was arrested from an illegally occupied residential quarter on Thursday morning. Police have also arrested three other; however, except one none of the arrested was among the seven named in the FIR. The other three persons identified as Shefali Mandal (55), Harasit Barui and Kishore Bansfor. Kishore was named in FIR.

Shefali and Kishore are university’s regular employees who work as a cook and a lab attendance respectively. Harasit is a casual worker. All these three accused are members of ‘Trinamul Siksha Bondhu Samity’. They were also present at the university on Wednesday during education minister Partha Chatterjee’s visit.

Police have produced the four before the ACJM court in Kalyani on Thursday and take to police custody for xx days.

The accused were charged under ten different section of Indian penal code.

A police officer said: “Prima facie the allegations against the accused found to be true. The accused persons have been charged under 141 (unlawful assembly with criminal trespass), 143 (unlawful assembly), 145 (continuous unlawful assembly), 149 (unlawful assembly with offence), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a government servant to discharge duties), 354 A (sexual harassment), 341 (wrongful restraint), 427 (mischief causing damage), 447 (criminal trespass), 504 (provocation for breach of peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC and under section 3 of prevention of public property damage act.

The arrest was made barely within 12 hours; the varsity authorities lodged complaint against ten persons on Wednesday evening. Partha Chatterjee before leaving for Calcutta summoned the Kalyani SDPO Rana Mukherjee and directed him to take action against the accused as per the complaint.

Sources said, Chatterjee who apparently given a clean chit to the members of ‘Trinamul Siksha Bondu Samity” despite their rampage, had to take a sudden break while leaving for Calcutta only the chief minister Mamata Banerjee ‘unhappy’ with his role instruct him to direct police to take ‘action’ against the accused.

Nevertheless, police could not arrest the prime accused Anjan Dutta and Bikash Acharjee, the two ‘Trinamul Sikshabondhu’ leaders and employees of the University. The others named in the FIR are Nitya Malo (mess attendance), Bhola (suspended casual worker), Rameshwar Roy (casual) and TMCP leader Prosenjit Mandal.

SP Nadia Arnab Ghosh said: “We have started investigation in to the incident. Some of the accused went absconding. We are hopeful to arrest them soon as well”.
