Kalyani, July 30: Bimalendu Biswas, controller of examination of Kalyani University, who was suspended in last year for his alleged role in ‘Cash for seat’ scam in Bhaktabala College, was removed and demoted on Thursday by the University’s executive council.

The council members adopted a unanimous decision in this regard during a meeting on Thursday on the basis of recommendation of the inquiry report submitted by Tapan Chatterjee, a former inspector general of police, appointed by the University.

As the demotion is announced as punishment, Biswas is expected to resume duty ending his suspension period, unless he challenges the decision of the EC at any court, said a university official.

Confirming the decision of the executive council, vice chancellor professor Rattanlal Hangloo said: “The members have unanimously decided to remove Bimalendu Biswas as the inquiry officer has found the charges of corruption brought against him were true. Biswas who summoned before the inquiry officer failed to prove him clean. The members were of the opinion that such a person should no more be entrusted with responsibility of the examination which concerned with life and career of the students”.

“The demotion was decided as punishment for Biswas. However, the EC is yet to find out a suitable post for him. This would be decided soon”, Hangloo added.

An EC member said: “Biswas directly appointed as the controller of examination which is an administrative post. We would examine his present rank and recommend a lower post which is yet to be identified. It may be similar to post of an office superintendent, which is basically clerical post”

Biswas, was, however, not available for comment.

Earlier on August 6 last year, Bimalendu Biswas was showcased alleged involvement into the cash for seat scam at Nadia’s Bhaktabala B Ed College on the basis of the state government appointed inquiry committee’s report. Biswas has been asked to submit his reply within two weeks and has also been asked to go on leave for indefinite period.

Later in the month he was suspended.

Vice chancellor Rattanlal Hangloo said: “The state government appointed investigation and subsequent probe ordered by the University indicates that Bimalendu Biswas was involvement into the irregularities in admission of students to Bhaktabala B Ed College. He was also accused in several other corruptions related to examination and admission. So removing him is a success of the clean up drive against corruption which we started since last year”.
