CPI (M) Leader Shot At, Beaten Up By Miscreants

Santipur, Feb. 20: A high school teacher from Nadia’s Santipur escaped an attempt on his life when armed miscreants allegedly backed by Trinamul fired at his while he was going to catch a train on his way to school. The teacher, who is also a CPI (M) activist, was later beaten up brutally by the miscreants apparently for speaking up against the ruling party in some public meetings.

Dipankar Chatterjee, 43, the history teacher of DuttapuliaUnitedAcademy and a resident of Ramangar area of Santipur, was admitted to Santipur state general hospital with multiple injuries on his legs, hands and back. Hospital sources said, x ray report indicates split on his left leg and a hemorrhage on his right arm.

Chatterjee CPI (M)’s Santipur-II local committee, who has taken a lead role for the party’s pre poll campaign in the town in connection with the ensuing municipality election slated for April.

His wife Swati Chatterjee, primary school teacher, has lodged complaint at Santipur police station against ‘unidentified’ Trinamul supporters.  However, so far no one was arrested in this connection.

According to local sources, the incident occurred at about 8.30 AM, while Chatterjee was heading towards Santipur rail station on his motorbike.

“I was rushing to take a train to Ranaghat for going to my school in Duttapulia. While passing through a lane near SantipurCollege, a group of about eight youths blocked my road. They pulled me down from the bike and started beating me up at random with iron rods and bamboo poles. The miscreants specifically targeted my two legs and hands. One of the miscreants also fired me, it missed target. They were hurling abusive and threatening me for more serious consequences if I again speak against the Trinamul Congress”, Chatterjee said from his hospital bed.

“They miscreants escaped when some locals rushed in to rescue me. They also took me to Hospital and informed my friends and family members”, Chatterjee added.

Santanu Chakraborty, a CPI (M) district committee  member said: “The Trinamul attacked Dipankar being afraid of his oratory skill. He has been the lead face of our campaign in recent times and become very vocal about the reign of terror unleashed by the Trinamul backed miscreants in the town. On February 10 Dipankar spoken at a party meeting opposite SantipurMunicipality and was very vocal about the deteriorating law and order situation in the town”.

Trinamul Congress MLA and chairman of Santipur Municipality Ajoy De refuted the allegation. “We are not concerned what the people from a party which once unleashed terror in the town have been saying. The people in Santipur give them befitting reply in the Municipal poll”.
