Couple Died In Road Accident On NH34

Kalyani, Dec. 12: An elderly couple died after the Mahindra Logan in which they were returning home from a marriage party had rammed on the back of a truck in high speed on NH34 amidst dense fog during the wee hours of Monday morning in Nadia’s Haringhata. While the couple had died on the spot, their teen aged daughter and son were critically injured in the accident.

The deceased couple was identified Sibaprasad Saha (53) and Annapurna Saha (50).

The couple’s daughter Sriparna (22) and son Akash (15) along with their driver Ganesh were admitted to JNM hospital in Kalyani in critical condition. While Sriparna suffered serious leg and head injuries, her brother Akash has multiple injuries and still remained unconscious.

Sriparna is a first year MA student at Rabindra Bharati University and Akash is studying at class eight Paul Chaoudhuri High School in Ranaghat.

Deceased Sibaprasad Saha, head of the family, had an eye clinic in Ranaghat and was a resident of Mahaprabhupara in the town.

Police said, the bizarre accident occurred at about 2.10am near Birohi-Muragacha village when the family was returning from a marriage reception of doctor’s son in Gayeshpur

 A patrolling van of Haringhata police station recovered the victims and sent to JNM hospital, where the couple was pronounced brought dead.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the driver of the car was running in a high speed despite dense fog and eventually lost control before ramming onto the truck from back. The car entered below the truck from behind”, an officer of Haringhata police said.

Local sources in Birohi said, the accident occurred when the driver of the car tried to overtake a lorry but failed control watching a car from opposite direction and rammed on the back of the truck running"

Neighbor of the victim family Kajjwal Chattopadhaya, who is also local Congress councilor said: “The four members of the family went to attend a marriage reception of a doctor’s son who used to attend their clinic in Ranaghat. Police informed us about the accident at about 4am and we rushed to Kalyani JNM hospital”.
