Cop Set Free Miscreants, Gheraoed By Mob

Karimpur, April 5: Angry villagers in Nadia’s Barbaqpur kept personnel of Karimpur police station gheraoed for seven hours since on Sunday morning after one of the officers’s allegedly set free two miscreants whom the villagers caught along with arms and handed over to them for threatening locals and teasing women.

The accused sub inspector identified as Tofazzel Haque was later ‘closed’ from duty. Superintendant of police, Nadia Arnab Ghosh later ordered a departmental inquiry against the officer.

The villagers become angry after the sub-inspector, who came to the sport being informed by the locals, started a case against the villagers instead of taking action against the miscreants, who were already set free by him.

The angry locals gheraoed the SI Tofazzel Haque and five others  demanding that the miscreants be arrested soon and he would apologize for his fault.

The gheraoed personnel included office in charge of the Karimpur police station Kuntal Bhattacharjee, who had to face the ire of the locals after going to the spot in a bid to rescue the other police officers.

The gheraoed was withdrawn at about 1.30 in the afternoon following circle inspector of Karimpur Rookumar Banerjee rushed to the spot and pacified the villagers assuring action against the errant sub inspector and arrest of the freed miscreants within 48 hours.

Trouble began in Barbaqpur at about 7 am after one Saiful Sheikh, son in law of local resident Jamir Sheikh, started teasing neighboring women in inebriated state.

Locals alleged that Saiful, who stays at in laws’ house and his brother in law Rezaul Sheikh, often hurl abusive words consuming alcohol and make obscene gestures with local women.

“Today also Saiful first an empty bottle of alcholol to elderly neighbor Minarul Mondal’s house. He told Zamir Sheikh to caution his son in law. But knowing this, Saiful and his brother in law Rezaul beaten up Minrarul. This angered the villagers”, said a local.

When a mob of angry villagers went to Zaimir Sheikh’s house, Saiful came out of home brandishing a pistol and threatened to open fire if anybody dare to attack him. Rezaul had also firearm in hand. Nevertheless, the locals in a desperate act caught the duo. A civic police volunteer posted in the village called the police station and within 15 minutes SI Tofazzel arrived at the spot”, said a local.
