Ranaghat, March 27: The CID would interrogate expelled secretary of Nadia district Trinamul Youth Congress Rakesh Ali in a bid to find out the ‘local link’ that helped the miscreants to execute the dacoity and rape at the Ranaghat based convent of Jesus and Mary.

The CID would explore the possibility of having connection between Ali and the Ranaghat incident, after the Nadia police on Friday night arrested him in connection with a murder case that occurred in January this year.

Rakesh is a resident of Nasrapara area in Ranaghat town and know to be a Mukul Roy loyalist. The convent of Jesus and Mary is located barely within 1 km from his home.

The police would also examine his role behind blockade of chief minister’s convoy in Ranaghat on March 17 evening.

According to local police sources a number of youths having proximity to Rakesh were seen shouting slogans against the state government and chief minister Mamata Banerjee during the blockade of the CM’s convoy on NH 34 in Ranaghat.

Earlier in last week Rakesh was detained for interrogation in connection with the Ranaghat convent rape and dacoity case. However, he was released later.

He was sacked by Trinamul’s disciplinary committee in last year after his name surfaced up in a number of murder cases.  He was also accused of bomb attack on two promoters having proximity to the party.

CID sources said that during the initial interrogation Rakesh was asked about providing shelter to some miscreants on the night on March 14.

“However, he denied the allegations. There were inconsistencies in his statement. We would try to examine him in detail this time”, said a sleuth.

According to sources, Rakesh Ali is one of those local links on whom the CID sleuths have literally stumbled upon.

SP Nadia Arnab Ghosh, however, denied that Ali has been arrested actually to find out the missing link with the Ranaghat convent rape and dacoity case.

“Rakesh Ali was wanted in a murder case that occurred in Bhatjangla in Krishnanagar early this year. We have arrested him on specific charges”, Ghosh said.

A CID source in Nadia has also claimed that it would also interrogate Rakesh along with Mohammed Salim Sheikh and Gopal Sarkar, who have been arrested in connection with the Ranaghat convent case.

“Both Gopal and Salim have been brought to Nadia and likely to quizzed on Friday night”, said a CID officer.

A CID officer in Krishnanagar said: “We also interrogated Rakesh earlier in connection with the Ranaghat case. Now we have decided to get him seated for face to face interrogation along with Mohammed Salim and Gopal”.
