Ranaghat, March 26: A hired gang of dacoits from Bangladesh acted in connivance with some local miscreants to loot cash and brutalize an elderly nun at the Convent of Jesus and Mary high school in Ranaghat on March 14.

This came to light following the arrest of a Bangladeshi National from Mumbai and his Indian patron from Bagdah in North 24 Parganas district on Thursday.

The CID sleuths think that the duo – Mohammed Salim Sheikh (alias Sikandar) and Gopal Sarkar are the prime suspects in the convent rape and dacoity case.

However, the probing team is yet to track the local link which provided all logistic support to the Bangladeshi gang.

An elderly Nun, the sister superior of the convent of Jesus and Mary was raped after the dacoity on early hours March 14. The state government ordered a CID probe. The Nun was admitted to Ranaghat hospital, but later left to an undisclosed location outside Bengal.

A senior police officer said: “It was case of dacoity. There was no other motive as the preliminary findings indicate after interrogation. But, the reason behind raping an elderly nun is not cleared so far”

The breakthrough came tracking one of the cell phones the dacoits have taken away with them and on the basis of tip off provided by some middlemen who work to get people sneaked either side of Indo-Bangladesh border.

In a major success, the CID sleuths on Thursday arrested Mohammed Salim Sheikh (44) from Mumbai’s Mahila Milan Khopar Patty under Nagpada police station in South Mumbai during the early hours of Thursday morning with the help of Mumbai police. The sleuths claimed that Salim has facial resemblance with suspect number 3, whose image was found in the CCTV.,

A CID team which went to Mumbai on a tip off to track Salim, took the early morning flight and arrived in Calcutta. He was later produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Ranaghat, which given 14 day’s CID custody for him. He was charged under section 376, 395 and 397 of the IPC.

However, Salim’s arrest was made possible only after the CID detained Gopal Sarkar, a businessman from Bagdah on Monday. During the interrogation, Gopal confessed to have organized the gang for the convent dacoity and also provided shelter to at least five of the gang members.

The CID on Thursday said that Gopal has also been arrested as one of the prime suspect. He would also be produced before the ACJM Ranaghat court on Friday.

According to CID sources, the initial tip of about Gopal was provided by the middlemen who help people to cross Bangladesh border at Petrapole.

A member of the investigating team said: “We have preliminary information that the miscreants have fled to Bangladesh. So we first talked to some middlemen in Gede, Dhantala, Petrapole and in Santipur. Some middlemen told us that they have seen at least three of the suspect found in CCTV to have sneaked to Bangladesh after the incident. They also told us about Gopal Sarkar, who was with them and often seen in border areas to receive Bangladeshi at different crossing points. So we detained him for interrogation. During the interrogation he confessed that he knew the gang and also left one of the members at Howrah station in last week for a train to Mumbai. Gopal also confessed that in past also he organized similar dacoities by the Bangladeshi miscreants”.

“Meanwhile, by this time we also able to track one of the cell phones had taken away by the dacoits in Mumbai. Accordingly a team of CID officers sent to Mumbai on Tuesday, which ultimately able to nab Salim early this morning”, a CID officer said.

“Salim has close link to Gopal Sarkar and often visit Bengal on his invitation. He has also developed a base in Mumbai. He was the senior most members in the gang which attacked the convent. The other members also called him as ‘Boss’ which we have seen in the CCTV footage. Salim also developed a habit to speak Hindi recently. He also had seen talking in Hindi in the CCTV footage and giving instructions to other members. Preliminary investigation indicates that it was Salim who actually brutalize the elderly nun”, said a CID officer.

APP Pradip Pramanik said: “It is a big success of the CID team. Considering the international focus on the incident and based on the case diary, we prayed for 14-days custody for the accused and the court has granted it. He would against be produced before the court on April 9”.
