The father of the deceased 14-yr-old, however, has refrained from lodging a police complaint, while police have started case of unnatural death.

Even though the incident occurred beyond school hours, the Chakdaha Purbachal Vidyapith (Boys) authorities, to which both the students are attached, had organized a mass counseling session for the students on Friday alerting them to be careful while making pranks or fighting on trivial issues with friends.

The victim students was identified as Atanu Chandra, a resident of Azgubitala area in Chakdaha town, who died after a blow by Joy Banik, a classmate, and resident of neighboring KBM, landed on his chest during a scuffle.

Atanu, son of a vegetable seller, was rushed to Chakdaha state general hospital, where he was brought dead.

A doctor at the hospital said: “A sudden blow on the chest of the boy had apparently blocked functions of his heart. It is not clear whether the boy had any past record of cardiac ailment. The exact reason behind death, however, could only be ascertained after post mortem”.

The bizarre indent occurred at about 7 PM on Thursday night when Atanu jostled over a seat with his classmate Joy at the residence of their private tutor – Ashim Debnath in Ramkrishnapally in Chakdaha, barely a km away from their residence.

A common friend of the two boys said: “It was not serious tiff the two got involved yesterday night. They often do so over grabbing seat close to the chair of our teacher, so we remained blissful about their act”

“We became concern only when Atanu had first hit Joy, who fell on the ground. We tried to calm down both, but Joy retaliated with a blow, but before we could whisk away Atanu, it landed on his chest. Atanu became unconscious. We raised alert when some locals took him to Chakdaha hospital. We also meanwhile informed our teacher who also arrived at the hospital, but by then Atanu had died”, the boy said.

The hospital authority informed the police, who taken the body for post mortem.

The police officers talked to Victim’s father Govinda Chanda, but he refused to lodge any complaint to the police.

He said: “I do not anymore want to know how my son died. I will never get him back even I came to know the truth. I think it is an accidental death. I have no grudge against Joy with whom my son had apparently a tiff. I told police to do its own duty, but I have nothing to tell them”.

Govinda also told his neighbors to control their grudge and not to indulge any sort of unlawful things.

Joy could not be noticed in public after the incident.

Family sources claimed that the boy fainted after he came to know that Atanu had died. “He has been crying inconsolably since he regained consciousness”, his father Gopal Banik said.

“I have no words to share the grief of Atanu’s father. I am shocked”, he added.

Assistant headmaster of Chakdaha Purbachal Vidyapith Subhomoy Nag said: “This is quite unfortunate incident. It was a prank that led to this tragic end of a life. I have told the students to be careful and not to react normally with Joy when he would return to class”.

The school, meanwhile on Friday held a mass counseling session of the students.

“We talked with the students for long in an assembly. We care made them cautious so that no such incident occurs again”, Nag said.
