Arms Racket Busted In Haringhata

Kalyani, Dec. 8: Police today busted an illegal arms racket in Nadia’s Haringhata and arrested two persons including son of a teacher who worked as the courier. Acting on a tip of police today picked up the courier first and busted the racket later including a small manufacturing unit while recovering a cache of improvised firearms ready for supply.

The two accused persons were identified as Fazlur Tarafdar (39) of Chandirampur and Iliyas Ali (41), a resident of Mitrapur under Haringhata police station.

Police have recovered seven improvised guns and some mechanical instruments like gas cutter, driller, spring and others which were used to manufacture the arms.

The accused persons were charged under Arms act and produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court and taken to police custody for ten days.

Nadia Superintendant of police Sishram Jhanjharia said: “A team of Haringhata police today conducted a raid at some villages and arrested two persons who were involved in making and supplying of fire arms in Nadia and adjacent districts. It appears they were operating a racket of arms supply. We are hopeful to nab the other members of the racket soon”.

Sources said, acting on a tip of police first nabbed Iliyas Ali on Wednesday evening while he was waiting for a ‘customer’ at the Jagulia bus stand adjacent to NH34.

An investigating officer of Haringhata police said, Iliyas is son a very popular teacher of a high school in Chandirampur and used to work as the courier of the racket and main contact person for trade.

Police recovered four fire arms from a bag he was carrying. Police later conducted raid at Chandirampur village on the basis of information provided by Iliyas during interrogation and arrested Fazlur Tarafdar, maker of improvised  fire arms.

“Fazlur was earlier arrested in arms case and recently released on bail. He has the knowhow about the technicalities of making improvised fire arms. He made a small unit at his home to make such fire arms. We have recovered some fire arms ready for supply along with some mechanical instruments used in making the guns”, Nadia SP added.
