Ambulance Crashed, 3 Died On NH34

Chakdaha, July 18: Three persons including a 28-year-old man being taken to a city hospital in Calcutta in an ambulance from Murshidabad’s Bhagawangola died following a collision with a truck on NH34 in Nadia’s Chakdaha early on Monday morning.
Sahijul Sheikh (28), cleaner of the truck and Sahzamal Haque (54), a passenger of the ambulance died on the spot, while Noor Islam Sheikh, the patient being taken to Calcutta, succumbed to the injuries later in Jawaharlal Nehru memorial hospital in Kalyani.

Four other relatives of the patients travelling in the ambulance were seriously injured in the accident and admitted to Jnm hospital in Kalyani.

Police said the accident occurred around 5.45am when the Calcutta bound ambulance rammed on the back of the stationary truck near Singher Bagan area as its cleaner Sahijul Sheikh was replacing one of the rear wheels.

Noor Islam Sheikh, the patient, who had cardiac troubles and was being taken to a hospital in Calcutta, was seriously injured in the accident along with four others of his family members. All the victims were initially taken to Chakdaha state general hospital from where they were shifted to JNM Hospital in Kalyani, where Noor succumbed later.
The cops have seized both vehicles.
An officer of Chakdaha police station said: “As per the version of the eye witnesses, it appears that the driver of the ambulance was in slumber while driving as they saw that the vehicle was running in a high speed in a zig zag manner and before it rammed on the back of the  truck”.
“We have came to know that the ambulance had started its journey for Calcutta from Berhampur late past midnight taking the patient and four of his family members. Earlier they came to Berhampur from Bhaganwagola. It appears that the driver was tired and lost in slumber early in the morning that led to the accident”, the police officer added.
Visiting doctors at JNM Hospital in Kalyani said that condition of four victims is very serious. “All the victims have got fatal head injuries apart other multiple injuries. They have incurred huge loss of blood and now in a very serious condition”
